What’s A Million To You?

“640K ought to be enough for anybody.” Bill Gates

What is a million? I was recently thinking about a project we had in grade school.  Collect one million bottle caps.  The reason?  To see what a million is.  To hold it, to measure it, to write about it, to fathom it.

Early in his career Bill Gates didn’t even see a reason to understand a million – in bytes that is.  He certainly understood it in currency!  Today we commonly talk about terabyte as if it is a common unit of measure.  There is even a term for this number: 1000000000000000000000000000 – it is a yottabyte.

Could you possibly collect a yotta?  What would you do with it?  Perhaps this girl has the right idea:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPmRb8ZTZlo
